In the United States, deer ticks are generally obtained in Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Deer ticks await their possible host in paths and trails along woods and grasslands. They are also discovered inside the den of smaller animals like white-footed mice, skunks, and raccoons. Deer ticks total their life cycle in about two years. However, from the absence of hosts, this cycle may possibly take longer being completed. Adult ticks feed in winter, and their preferred host will be the white-tailed deer. Adult ticks mate though feeding for the deer. The male tick dies quickly right after mating, even though the female tick remains attached for the host right up until spring. Then, she drops off and lays eggs.
